Mary is the director of ChrysalisQ, a non-profit dedicated to providing a safe space for LGBTQI+ families with the goal of building community for those who are feeling isolated. Prior to accepting this position in April of 2021, Mary was both a pastor and a math professor. At first glance, these two professions do not appear to have much in common. However, for Mary, they are both about listening attentively to others and responding with care. Mary is passionate about social justice issues and has been a long-time advocate for the LGBTQI+ community. Whether that be testifying at the capitol, participating and organizing pride events, or writing on behalf of the community in a local paper, Mary has consistently worked toward a more equitable and safe environment for LGBTQI+ people. One of her more recent research grant projects, “Destination Texas” tells the stories of six LGBTQI+ people who immigrated to Texas from around the world. The project was funded by the Henry Luce Foundation via the Institute for Diversity and Civic Life. Apparently, Mary enjoys going to school. She has a Doctor of Ministry degree from Brite Divinity School, focusing on trauma and moral injury of women who are survivors of childhood sexual abuse and whether the theological theme of resurrection is meaningful to them. She also has a Master of Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and a Master of Arts in Mathematics from the State University of New York at New Paltz. In her spare time, Mary loves to read, play with her grandchildren, ride her bike, and spend time with her spouse, Betty.
