“The Madman Across the Water: The Exorcism of the Gerasene Demoniac”
Mark 5:1-20, Rev. Amy Grogan
The Story of the Gerasene demoniac is one of the most bizarre stories in scripture. Jesus lands in Gentile territory and is greeted by a man possessed by a posse of demons who have a stand-off with Jesus. It doesn’t last long. At their request, he casts them into a nearby herd of swine, who then stampede off a cliff and drown, ruining the local economy. Worrying what he will destroy next, the locals send Jesus away. And when the former demoniac wants to follow Jesus, Jesus sends him away.
The actual transformation of the demoniac is barely mentioned, and this has always sparked my imagination. Why not? What for? What if?
